Cultural Focused

At The Island Classroom, we believe that cultural immersion has the power to shape young minds, fostering empathy, understanding, and a deep connection to the Pacific region. Our cultural-focused programs go beyond surface-level experiences, creating opportunities for students to develop meaningful relationships with local communities and gain insights that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Through hands-on activities, students are welcomed into the heart of Fijian life. They’ll experience the daily rhythms of village life, build a bili bili (bamboo raft), help prepare a traditional lovo feast, and join in a heartfelt church service. By participating in these customs, students don’t just learn about Fijian culture—they become part of it, forming authentic connections that transcend cultural boundaries.

Village Visit

On a culturally focused immersion students will spend time in a Village. Hands-on experiences such as weaving mats, crafting bili bili bamboo rafts, and learning traditional dances connect students with the skills and artistry passed down through generations.

School Visit

School visits are a highlight of any immersion. Fijian students welcome the opportunity meet new friends, share traditions and knowledge. Students spend time in a classroom, engage in meaningful discussion, inevitably learn a song or two (so be prepared) and share food and traditions.

Community Project

Creating immediate and genuine impact in a community could involve a multi-immersion project or a short project that can mean a lot to a village. Projects are found through cooperation with the community, the ministry of health or education to ensure there is collaboration and that it addresses a specific need.

Faith

Taveuni is multi-cultural and multi-faith, and each is intrinsically connected to everyday life. Be part of the community as they gather to celebrate, show gratitude, and sing! Your students will find a new voice through song.

Traditions & Festivals

Attend a Lovo, or a festival such as Diwali. Depending on the time of year of your visit your group can participate in a local festival, or attend, and help prepare for a Lovo. Festivals and gatherings are a key part of life in Fiji.

Everyday Experiences

Alongside planned experiences will be the unexpected moments where Fiji and its people share their every day. Be it on the road, on the sports field, in the market, your students will see life differently once they have seen Taveuni.
