A Typical Day in Our Fiji Student Immersion Program

At The Island Classroom, each day is intentionally designed to support curriculum outcomes across science, geography, sustainability and global citizenship. Our daily schedule balances hands‑on fieldwork, cultural learning, reflection time and wellbeing, giving students a structured, safe and meaningful immersion experience. and time to absorb the unique environment of Taveuni. While our schedule is structured to maximise the experience, we also embrace the spirit of Fiji, leaving room for unexpected discoveries and moments that make each day special.

Active Learning and Exploration

7:00 AM – Morning Wake-Up: Start the day with a nutritious breakfast to fuel the morning’s activities.

8:00 AM – Immersion Activity: Dive straight into the focus of the program, such as coral reef restoration, mangrove planting, or a guided hike through Bouma National Heritage Park. For cultural programs, mornings may include a visit to a village to learn traditional crafts or cooking.

10:30 AM – Break: A short break for refreshments and reflection and then continue with the activity through to lunch.

Afternoon: Deeper Engagement and Collaboration

12:30 PM – Lunch: A relaxed meal at Camp Taveuni or on-site at an activity location.

1:30 PM – Afternoon Activity: Continue with an immersive project, like snorkeling at the Rainbow Reef, tree planting, or assisting with local community initiatives. For cultural programs, this might involve preparing a lovo or learning Fijian dance.

3:30 PM – Reflection Time: Small group discussions or journal writing to process the day’s experiences and connect them to broader learning objectives.

Evening: Bonding and Reflection

5:30 PM – Relax and Refresh: Time to unwind with a swim, group games, or personal reflection.

6:30 PM – Dinner: Enjoy a meal featuring local flavours providing a chance to refuel and connect with the group.

8:00 PM – Evening activities includes daily reflection around the campfire, journal writing and board games.

Our daily schedule connects directly to the Australian and New Zealand curricula. Coral reef restoration and mangrove planting build understanding of ecosystems and climate resilience. Guided hikes through Bouma National Heritage Park support geography and biodiversity learning. Cultural activities such as lovo preparation, traditional crafts and village visits deepen intercultural understanding and global citizenship. Reflection time strengthens critical thinking, personal development and communication skills.

All activities are supervised by qualified local guides and Island Classroom staff. Teachers remain present throughout the day, and all activities follow our risk management framework, including water safety protocols, environmental guidelines and emergency procedures.
