Whether it’s restoring vital mangrove ecosystems or planting trees in local communities as a carbon-offset initiative, this activity with The Island Classroom, goes beyond digging holes—it’s about building a sustainable future.

Students work alongside community members, learning firsthand how trees protect coastlines, combat climate change, and provide resources for local livelihoods. From stabilising vulnerable shorelines with mangroves to reforesting inland areas, every tree planted contributes to a healthier planet and a better community.
Mighty Mangroves
The mighty mangrove is a natural sea wall and a vital ecosystem. As the focus on climate moves to adaptation the restoration of the mangrove areas is key in ensuring biodiversity and food security are sustainable. Depending on the season of your visit to Taveuni, students can participate in planting mangrove or raising seedlings – each an important step and great learning opportunity.
