Planning a School Trip to Fiji: Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a student immersion programme requires careful consideration of learning outcomes, logistics and student wellbeing. To help schools explore what is possible, we’ve answered some of the questions we are most frequently asked about educational travel in Fiji

Why Choose Fiji for a Student Immersion Programme?

Fiji offers something increasingly difficult to find in education: opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with the real world.

From marine ecosystems and biodiversity to community development and climate adaptation, students are able to experience concepts they may have previously encountered only through textbooks and classroom discussion.

As one of Australia’s closest Pacific neighbours, Fiji also provides an ideal setting for students to deepen their understanding of the region they are part of.

What Is The Island Classroom?

The Island Classroom is a multi-day, place-based student immersion programme located on Taveuni Island, Fiji. We specialise in hands-on environmental and cultural learning that encourages students to engage with people, place and purpose.

Taveuni itself becomes part of the learning experience. The island offers opportunities to explore ocean environments, biodiversity, aquaculture, climate challenges, community resilience and cultural connection, all within a single programme.

How Is The Island Classroom Different from a Typical School Tour?

Many educational tours focus on visiting places. An immersion programme focuses on understanding them.

Students don’t simply pass through locations. They engage with communities, participate in learning experiences, reflect on different perspectives and develop a deeper appreciation of environmental and cultural systems.

Our programmes are designed to create connection, curiosity, and meaningful learning rather than simply ticking destinations off an itinerary.

Who Are the Programmes Designed For?

Our programmes are designed primarily for school groups who want more than an educational tour. You may be seeking deep environmental, cultural and oceanic learning, or a connection to faith, community and schools. Or, perhaps best of all, a combination of both.

Whether students are exploring biodiversity and climate adaptation, participating in cultural exchange, connecting with local schools or engaging with community life, the emphasis is on meaningful learning through experience, connection and reflection.

We also host study tours, university groups and selected community or organisational cohorts where there is a strong alignment with our educational focus.

Where Do Students Stay?

All groups stay at Camp Taveuni, a purpose-built facility designed specifically for multi-day immersion learning. Check out Camp Taveuni.

The camp provides comfortable accommodation alongside spaces for learning, discussion, cultural activities and group reflection, creating an environment that supports both personal growth and educational outcomes.

How Long Do Programmes Run?

Most programmes run between seven and ten days, although customised options can be developed to suit school schedules and objectives.

We do not offer single-day programmes because meaningful immersion requires time. Deeper learning often occurs when students move beyond first impressions and begin to build genuine connections with the people and places around them.

What Types of Learning Experiences Are Included?

Programmes may include:

  • Oceanic learning
  • Biodiversity studies
  • Aquaculture workshops
  • Climate adaptation activities
  • Cultural immersion
  • School exchanges
  • Environmental stewardship projects

Each day on Taveuni presents opportunities for learning, discovery and reflection. See our activities list

Can Programmes Be Aligned with Curriculum Goals?

Yes.

One of the strengths of The Island Classroom is the ability to tailor programmes to support specific educational objectives. Teachers can align immersion activities with curriculum areas such as:

  • Science
  • Geography
  • Sustainability
  • Wellbeing
  • Environmental studies
  • Global citizenship
  • Cultural studies

Customisation helps ensure the experience complements classroom learning while making those lessons tangible and memorable.

Is Taveuni a Safe Destination for Students?

Taveuni is widely recognised as a welcoming and safe destination.

The Island Classroom follows strict health and safety protocols, while accommodation, transport and activity partners are carefully selected to meet high standards. Environmental and ocean-based activities operate under robust risk-management procedures aligned with school requirements.

Student wellbeing and safety remain central to every stage of programme planning and delivery.

How Do Students Connect with Local Communities?

Community connection is one of the core learning domains of The Island Classroom.

Students may participate in village visits, school exchanges and cultural activities that encourage genuine engagement with local people and traditions. Experiences such as traditional Fijian cooking and community interaction help students develop cultural understanding through participation rather than observation.

What Do Students Gain from the Experience?

Students often return home with:

  • Greater confidence and independence
  • Practical environmental knowledge
  • Stronger communication skills
  • Increased cultural understanding
  • A deeper appreciation of Pacific cultures
  • Insight into climate adaptation and sustainability challenges
  • A stronger understanding of the interconnected nature of communities and ecosystems

Most importantly, they gain perspectives that are difficult to achieve within a traditional classroom setting alone.

How Far in Advance Should Schools Plan?

We recommend beginning the planning process at least six months before your intended travel dates. This allows time for programme development, approvals, family communication, travel arrangements and student preparation.

However, if timelines are shorter, we encourage schools to contact us, as we will always do our best to explore available options.

Ready to Explore What Is Possible?

The most memorable educational experiences are often those that connect learning with place, people and purpose.

Through oceanic learning, environmental exploration, cultural immersion and community connection, The Island Classroom helps students develop knowledge, skills and perspectives that extend far beyond the classroom.
